The flawless GA4 migration and creation of advanced funnel reports at Azion

See how we executed the migration from Universal Analytics to GA4 at Azion, mapping product events and creating advanced funnel reports.

The forced transition from Google Analytics Universal to GA4 was a nightmare for many companies, but for me, it was the perfect opportunity to clean house. In my work with Azion, we didn't just want to "install the new script." The goal was to leverage GA4's event-driven architecture to build a crystal-clear data view, strictly following Google's official recommendations and integrating it with the complex ecosystem we had already created.

The GA4 migration began with surgical event mapping. In Universal Analytics, the view was heavily focused on pageviews (sessions). In GA4, everything is an event. I mirrored the same tracking depth we built in Mixpanel straight into GA4. We rebuilt the entire data layer to perfectly capture the PQL journey, from "signup" to crucial activation events like "deploy_edge_functions", "add_credit_card", and "subscription". Data accuracy had to be unquestionable.

Building advanced reports and explorations

Having the right data entering the system is only half the job; the other half is knowing how to read it. GA4 has a steep learning curve for report extraction. During the GA4 migration, I developed custom Explorations to visually and actionably measure funnel conversions. We were no longer looking at vanity metrics.

The main focus of these reports was analyzing technical content traffic. I built native dashboards within GA4 to measure in detail the usage and activities on the blog, whitepaper downloads, and, critically, engagement with the technical documentation. An engineer's behavior while reading documentation is one of the strongest signals of platform usage intent.

By crossing these documentation reads with account creation and edge function deployments, the marketing and product teams could finally understand which articles and tutorials were actually generating revenue. The GA4 migration stopped being an annoying technical obligation and became a competitive advantage, proving once again that data governance is the invisible foundation of every scaling commercial operation.
