How to track AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console
Search Console has a presence in AI Overviews and AI Mode, but the form of analysis has changed in 2026. In addition to the aggregated data in the Web Performance report, Google has started testing a specific generative AI report for some properties.
How data enters the web report
Google's documentation on AI features states that links displayed in AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of the overall Search Console traffic for the “Web” search type. Clicks and impressions follow their own visibility rules.
In AI Overviews, links share block position and printing requires the link to be displayed or expanded. In AI Mode, each follow-up question acts as a new query. The Search Console metrics documentation details these rules.
The Generative AI Report
In 2026, Search Console started rolling out a specific report with AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions. It allows you to analyze pages, countries, devices and dates. Access is still limited to a subset of owners and may depend on sufficient volume.
The specific report works with impressions and does not replace traditional Performance. Data from experiments in Search Labs is not included.
How to analyze
Compare pages that receive generative impressions with their queries, content, and conversions. Observe trend, not just a spike. Combine landing pages with analytics to measure sessions, engagement, leads and revenue. Google does not serve all queries and may apply privacy and aggregation limits.
Create publish and update notes. When a page grows, evaluate whether the gain coincides with indexing, content changes, seasonality or newness of the product. Don't attribute causality just because the report went up after a change.
Complete with other sources
Use referrals from chatgpt.com, data from Bing Webmaster Tools, and controlled testing of prompts. No dashboard covers the entire generative journey. Also track brand accuracy and competitive presence.
