SEO and GEO
What has changed in generative search in 2026
In 2026, generative search became more integrated into the core search experience and began offering proprietary metrics for publishers. The most relevant change was not a new optimization trick, but increased transparency about impressions and citations — accompanied by clearer guidance against GEO hacks.
AI Overviews and AI Mode have come closer
In January, Google announced Gemini 3 as the default model for AI Overviews and allowed you to start a conversation in AI Mode from the summary. The official update describes a more fluid transition between short response and conversational exploration.
This extends journeys with follow-up questions. For publishers, the query stops being an isolated phrase and starts generating subtopics and new retrievals.
Quotes gained more context
In May, Google announced changes to bring links closer to the snippets they support and highlight original content and trusted sources in generative experiences. The publication on web exploration reinforces the role of links in the continuity of research.
Search Console gained generative reporting
The generative AI performance report has started to be released for some properties, with impressions of AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. The data also continues to make up the Web type in the traditional report.
Bing now shows citations
In February, Bing Webmaster Tools released AI Performance, with total citations, cited pages, grounding queries, and trends across Copilot, Bing, and select integrations.
Google explained what doesn't work
In July, Google published straightforward guidance: Search does not use llms.txt, does not require special schema, does not need content rewritten “for AI”, and does not recommend artificial fragmentation or inauthentic mentions. The Optimization Guide for Generative Resources prioritizes technical SEO and original content.
What to do now
Ensure access and indexing, produce your own evidence and track citations and impressions with method. Treat 2026 as the year GEO starts moving from manual captures to platform metrics — still incomplete, but more observable.
