SEO and GEO
How content, indexing and authority influence visibility in AI
Content, indexing and authority play different roles in AI visibility. Indexing makes a page eligible for retrieval. The content determines whether it answers the question. Authority helps the system trust that that source deserves to participate in the response. No layer replaces the others.
Indexing opens the door
A URL needs to be discovered, crawled, processed, and chosen as canonical. Check HTTP status, robots, noindex, canonical, sitemap, internal links and text rendering. Google requires the page to be indexed and snippet eligible to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Other engines use their own crawlers and sources. Therefore, audit OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot and relevant agents separately. Allowing tracking does not guarantee use; blocking may prevent direct access to content.
Content solves the question
After finding the page, the engine evaluates its usefulness for that query. Title, introduction, headings and text need to align problem and answer. Include evidence, examples, and limitations. Long content is not automatically better; Specific content is often easier to use than a page that tries to cover all intents.
Authority reduces uncertainty
Show authorship, experience, sources, clients or methodology when relevant. Build presence in real places in the sector. Links and mentions should not be pursued as empty counts; they work best when they reflect a verifiable relationship or contribution.
The interaction between layers
An original search without internal links may not be discovered. An indexed page with generic text offers no evidence. A recognized company with outdated information may be described incorrectly. The audit must record where the chain breaks.
Work order
First, fix access and canonicalization. Then, map out questions and content gaps. Then publish your own knowledge and distribute it on channels where experts and customers can validate it. Finally, track citations, impressions, and conversions.
This sequence brings GEO closer to a measurable practice. The article Is GEO really different from SEO? explains the relationship, while GEO audit organizes the technical and editorial tests.
