SEO and GEO
Is GEO really different from SEO?
GEO is different from SEO in the results that are observed, but it does not start from a separate technical base. SEO seeks visibility in search engines; GEO observes how a brand or content participates in AI-generated responses. In practice, indexing, relevance, authority and clarity continue to underpin both.
What stays the same
A page needs to be accessible, indexable and understandable. Internal links help discovery. Original content helps the engine respond to a need. Authority and external references help validate the source. Without these fundamentals, changing headings or creating a file “for AI” rarely solves the problem.
Google itself states that SEO practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. To appear as a supporting link, the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. There is no additional technical requirement or specific schema for these resources.
What changes in GEO
The unit of visibility is no longer just position and click. They start to import brand mention, URL citation, presence in the response, description accuracy and participation in a set of recommendations. The same query can generate different answers and use multiple helpers.
Additionally, the platforms do not share the same index, model, or font policy. A page visible on Google may not be retrieved by ChatGPT; a brand mentioned in Perplexity may not appear in AI Mode. GEO requires measurement by platform and by question set.
What doesn't change
There is no direct control over the recommendation. The company improves the quality and availability of public evidence, but does not purchase organic citation guarantees. You also shouldn't create dozens of pages for minimal prompt variations. Google's guide to generative search recommends original and useful content, and advises against hacks like artificial chunking and inauthentic mentions.
SEO and GEO work best as a single discovery system. Technical SEO guarantees access and organization. Content and authority help resolve the query. The GEO layer adds testing for answers, citations, competitors, and accuracy. The article about content, indexing and authority shows how these pieces connect.
