Does LLMS.txt improve visibility in Google AI?

No. In July 2026, Google declared that llms.txt does not improve or harm visibility or rankings in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. The file can serve tools that decide to adopt it, but it does not replace crawling, indexing, content and authority.

What is llms.txt

llms.txt was proposed in 2024 as a Markdown file in the root of the site with context and useful links to language applications. The specification is an open proposal and does not define how each system should process the file.

The idea can be practical for documentation: offering a concise map and versions in Markdown facilitates consumption by agents or tools that explicitly seek this format. This is different from a standard adopted by search engines.

Google's current position

Google's official guide to generative search states that Search does not use llms.txt and ignores these files as a special signal. Google also says that it is not necessary to create new machine-readable files, markup, or Markdown versions to appear in generative resources.

Therefore, implementing llms.txt with the expectation of improving AI Overviews is an investment without basis in the product's stated functionality.

Can it help in other contexts?

Perhaps, if a specific consumer documents support. An internal assistant, development tool, or agent can use the file as an entry point. In this case, define who consumes it, how the information is updated and which metric will indicate usefulness.

Don't assume that ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot use llms.txt for ranking. Check the documentation for each platform. For ChatGPT Search, OpenAI's public guidance focuses on accessing OAI-SearchBot, robots.txt and noindex, not llms.txt.

What to prioritize

Ensure that important pages respond correctly, have internal links, accessible text, coherent canonical, sitemap and fonts. Keep original content and information up to date. If there is still time, publish llms.txt as a documented experiment, not an SEO fix.

The distinction matters because the file is easy to generate, while the issues that actually impede visibility—generic content, poor indexing, and weak authority—require work. See errors that prevent AI mechanisms from understanding the company.
